Lent Dinner & Service

Blaine Christian Church, 7018 Putney Road (corner of Joyfield and Putney Rds), invites the community to join us at the church on Ash Wednesday, March 1st, for the first event of 40 days of preparation for celebrating Easter. The evening will begin with a Soup And Bread Supper at 6:30 pm in the fellowship hall (there is no cost). After sharing the meal, those who attend will gather at 7:15 pm in the original worship area of the church building for a special Ash Wednesday/Lent Worship Service. Even though Ash Wednesday and Lent are not explicitly mentioned in God’s Word, it's based on examples of self-examination which are consistently recorded throughout the Bible. Beginning around 230 A.D., a small group of Christians started fasting for 40 hours leading up to Easter, in order to prepare their hearts. Several years later, it was extended to a seven day time of preparation known as “Holy Week”. Finally, in 325 A.D., the church officially established a 40 day period of preparation, symbolic for, and in remembrance of, Jesus’ 40 days of testing in the wilderness. The word “Lent” means “Long Spring Days”. A better visual might be “Long Winter Days,” but the thought is still the same. This 40 day period commemorates Jesus’ time in the desert where, immediately after His baptism, He was “led” by the Spirit into the wilderness. During those 40 days, Jesus was “tempted by Satan”, but remained true to His purpose. The Ash Wednesday/Lent observance at Blaine will be a chance to reflect on our purpose and a time to consider what Jesus did for all of us. It will be the start of a journey that will lead up to our celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on that first Easter morning.
